BMW M4 G82 CMST Carbon Kit Install Guide

بواسطة AME Motorsport 01 Jul 2026
Grey BMW M4 G82 with CMST carbon front lip, canards and side skirts, low front three-quarter studio shot

This is an installation guide for the CMST carbon-fibre kit on the 2021-2025 BMW M4 G82, covering the front lip, four-piece canard set and side skirts. The kit fits over the factory panels using 3M VHB tape, panel-bonding adhesive and self-tapping screws, with some pieces locating on the M4's original mounting clips. The front lip is offered in more than one style, and there is an important detail for cars with the front Active Cruise Control sensor. Allow most of a day with two people and a hoist.

  • Vehicle: BMW M4 G82 (and M4 Competition), 2021-2025
  • Pieces covered: Front lip, canards (four-piece), side skirts
  • Fixings: 3M VHB tape, panel-bonding adhesive, self-tapping screws, factory clip points
  • Difficulty: Moderate; canard placement and symmetry need care
  • Time: Most of a day with two people

Tools and preparation

You will need a trim-removal kit, a cordless drill, degreaser or wax-and-grease remover, adhesion promoter, fine sandpaper, masking tape, a tape measure and a heat gun. The G82's bonded panels rely entirely on clean, warm paint: wipe each bonding surface with degreaser, key the contact faces lightly with sandpaper where the instructions call for it, apply adhesion promoter, and make sure the car is above roughly 15°C before any tape touches paint. In cooler Australian conditions, bring the car and the parts indoors and warm them first.

Identify which front lip you have before you start. CMST offers this lip in more than one version, and the lower fixing differs: some versions screw to the lip's own underside, while the alternate version uses the car's original factory bumper screws. Read the version note that comes with your lip so you use the correct lower fixings, then dry-fit everything and mark positions with masking tape before committing adhesive.

Difficulty and time estimate

This is a moderate job. The side skirts are the most forgiving. The front lip needs careful drilling and, on some cars, attention to the front sensor. The canards are the fiddly part — not because they are hard to bond, but because getting all four level and symmetrical across the bumper takes measuring. Set aside most of a day and work with a second person throughout.

Step 1: Front lip

For the cleanest result, remove the front bumper first — it gives far better access to align and fix the lip than working on the car. With the bumper off (or in place if you prefer), offer the lip up and check the fit along the whole lower edge. Fix the lip at the left and right clip points with self-tapping screws, then secure the lower edge: depending on your lip version, that is either self-tappers into the lip or the factory bumper screws. Add panel-bonding adhesive at the screw points and 3M tape along the top mating edge for a continuous hold.

ACC sensor note: if your M4 has the front Active Cruise Control radar, the lip must be fitted so it does not obstruct the sensor's aperture — align the lip to the sensor cut-out rather than covering it. Getting this wrong can interfere with the cruise system, so check the sensor's line of sight before final fixing. Once the lip is set, refit the bumper and the number plate.

Step 2: Canards (four pieces)

The canards are a four-piece set — two per side, a smaller upper blade and a larger lower blade on each corner of the front bumper. Start by keying the bonding face of each canard with sandpaper, clean with promoter, and apply 3M tape. The key to a professional finish is measuring: mark each canard's position on the bumper with masking tape before bonding, and use a tape measure so the left and right sides match. As a working reference, the upper (smaller) canards sit higher on the bumper and the lower (larger) canards sit further back and down — measure equal distances on both sides rather than judging by eye.

The most common mistake is fitting the upper blade where the lower should go, or setting one side higher than the other. Dry-fit all four, confirm the heights are level left-to-right, then peel the tape and press each one home with firm, even pressure. Hold each canard while the adhesive grabs.

Step 3: Side skirts

The side skirts run along the lower door sills. Dry-fit each skirt first to check the position against the factory sill and the screw points. Clean the inner bonding edge, apply 3M tape along it and add a few beads of panel-bonding adhesive. Peel one end of the tape, and with two people align the skirt to the door line — confirm it sits level and meets the front lip cleanly — then peel the rest, press home, and drive self-tapping screws underneath to fix the lower edge. There is also a small corner detail at the leading edge of each skirt that bonds with 3M and a few points of adhesive; press it down and let it set. Repeat on the other side with the same method.

Fitment tips and cautions

  • Confirm your lip version before drilling so you use the correct lower fixings (self-tappers vs factory screws).
  • Respect the ACC sensor. If fitted, keep the front radar aperture clear and check it before final fixing.
  • Measure the canards. Mark positions and match left-to-right with a tape measure — symmetry is what makes them look factory.
  • Warm surfaces only. 3M VHB tape needs warm, dry, degreased paint; bond indoors in cold weather.
  • Two people on the long panels. The skirts and lip need one person holding alignment while the other fixes.
  • Cure time. Keep the car out of the rain and away from a wash while the adhesive reaches full strength.

Frequently asked questions

Which front lip version do I have?

CMST supplies the G82 lip in more than one style, and the lower fixing differs between them. Check the version note included with your lip — one fixes with self-tapping screws into the lip, the other uses the factory bumper screws. Using the correct method matters for a tidy fit.

Will the kit affect my Active Cruise Control?

Only if the front lip is fitted over the radar aperture. On ACC-equipped cars, align the lip to the sensor cut-out so the radar's line of sight stays clear, and verify the system before you finish.

How do I get the canards even?

Measure. Mark each canard's position with masking tape and use a tape measure so the upper and lower blades sit at matching heights on both sides. Dry-fit all four before bonding any of them.

Do I have to remove the front bumper?

It is not strictly required, but removing the bumper gives much better access to align and fix the front lip and usually produces a cleaner result. Many installers take it off for that reason.

Should I have it professionally fitted?

If you are not confident drilling the lip or matching the canards, yes. AME Motorsport can arrange professional fitment in Australia so the sensor, the lip version and the canard symmetry are all handled correctly.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
