Tesla Model X CMST Carbon Body Kit Install Guide

بواسطة AME Motorsport 01 Jul 2026
2023 Tesla Model X in black with a CMST carbon fibre front lip, side skirts and rear diffuser, 3/4 front low angle in a studio

The CMST carbon-fibre kit for the 2021–2025 Tesla Model X is a bolt-on and tape-on upgrade that fits the refreshed Model X without cutting or welding. The kit sharpens the lower bodywork in pre-preg dry carbon fibre — a front lip, side skirts, a rear diffuser and a boot spoiler — while leaving the falcon-wing doors and their sensors untouched. Each piece mounts with 3M VHB acrylic tape, a bead of structural adhesive and self-tapping screws, so two people working with a hoist can complete the fit in a day.

This guide covers the Model X kit in the order we recommend, with the clearance and alignment cautions that matter on a tall, heavy SUV with air suspension.

Quick facts

  • Vehicle: Tesla Model X (refresh)
  • Fitment years: 2021–2025
  • Key pieces: front lip, side skirts, rear diffuser, boot spoiler
  • Material: dry carbon fibre, gloss or matte clear-coat
  • Fixing method: 3M VHB tape + structural adhesive + self-tapping screws (no cutting)
  • Skill level: intermediate to advanced; two people recommended
  • Estimated time: 5–7 hours

Tools and preparation

Offer every piece up to the car dry before any tape backing comes off. The Model X is wide, so a careful test-fit and masking-tape alignment marks pay off. You will need:

  • Trim-removal and plastic pry tools
  • Electric screwdriver or impact driver, plus a drill for lip pilot holes
  • Adhesion promoter and clean microfibre cloths
  • Fine sandpaper (240–400 grit) to key the bonding faces
  • 3M VHB tape (usually pre-applied) and a tube of glass-grade structural adhesive
  • Masking tape for alignment, and a heat gun for cold-weather tack
  • A hoist, which makes the lip, skirts and diffuser far easier on a tall SUV

Handle the carbon by its edges on a padded surface; the clear-coat scratches easily. Bond at room temperature — 3M acrylic tape grabs best between roughly 21°C and 38°C — and warm the panels with a heat gun if the workshop is cold.

Step 1 — Front lip

Offer the front lip up to the lower bumper to check the clip positions before committing adhesive. Clean the bumper face with the adhesion promoter to strip wax and road film, then sand the lip's inner upper edge and wipe it clean. Run 3M tape along that edge with a few dabs of structural adhesive. On the Model X the lip is wide, so peel one end of the backing, locate the lip with a helper steadying the opposite side, and confirm it sits centred and symmetrical against the wheel openings before peeling the rest. Press firmly along the full length. Where the kit calls for it, pre-drill the lower mounting points at the marked angle, then drive self-tapping screws to lock the lip and bond the corner sections last.

Step 2 — Side skirts

Clean and lightly sand the rocker panel along the skirt line. Run 3M tape along the top inner edge of each skirt with a few points of adhesive, and clean the matching rocker area with the promoter. Peel one end, lift the skirt into place with a helper, and check it tucks under the door sill and follows the rocker front to rear. Confirm the position, peel the rest and press home, then fix the underside with self-tapping screws. The forward end near the front wheel usually wants an extra screw so it cannot lift at speed.

Step 3 — Rear diffuser

Release the rear arch fasteners and the lower bumper trim so the diffuser can seat flush, and support the number-plate light on its bracket. Offer the diffuser to the rear under-tray, line up the fins so they sit level, and fix the centre with structural adhesive and the outer points with self-tapping screws. Route and reconnect any rear lighting through the diffuser channel, observing the marked positive and negative leads, then refit the bumper trims and arch liners.

Step 4 — Boot spoiler

Sand and clean the spoiler's bonding feet, apply 3M tape with a few dabs of adhesive, and clean the boot-lid contact points with the promoter. With a helper holding one side, peel one end of the backing, align the spoiler centrally to the boot lip, confirm it is square, then peel the rest and press each foot home. Hold it under pressure for a minute so the tape grabs. Take care not to disturb the high-mounted brake light or the rear-view camera as you work.

Step 5 — Final alignment and curing

With every piece fitted, confirm the lip is square to the bumper, the skirts run parallel to the sills, and the diffuser fins are level. Re-press all bonded edges for full contact, then leave the car to cure before washing or driving in the rain; acrylic tape reaches working strength in a few hours and full strength over several days.

Fitment tips and cautions

  • Leave the falcon-wing doors and sensors alone. The kit is lower-body only; do not obstruct the door-edge sensors or the camera housings.
  • Mind air-suspension travel. The Model X rides high and low depending on mode; check the lip and diffuser clear the ground at the lowest setting.
  • Test-fit the wide lip carefully. Symmetry matters on a wide front bumper, so mark the centre and confirm even corner wrap before taping.
  • Bond warm. Warm the panels and the car with a heat gun if you are working below about 18°C.
  • Paint-match if you want body colour. The carbon ships clear-coated; a panel shop can respray before fitting.

FAQ

Does the kit interfere with the falcon-wing doors or sensors?

No. The kit fits the front lip, side skirts, rear diffuser and boot spoiler — all lower-body or boot-lid pieces. It does not touch the falcon-wing doors, their hinges or the door-edge sensors, so the doors operate normally.

Is it dry carbon fibre or FRP?

The headline pieces are pre-preg dry carbon fibre with a clear-coat finish, so the weave shows. FRP is offered on some pieces as a lower-cost option that paints well but is heavier and has no exposed weave; confirm the material per piece when ordering.

Will the kit fit the pre-2021 Model X?

No. This kit is cut for the 2021-onward refreshed Model X, which has revised bumpers. The earlier Model X uses different bodywork, so confirm your model year before ordering.

Does the lip cause problems with the air suspension lowering?

The lip and diffuser lower the effective clearance, so on the air suspension's lowest setting you should approach steep driveways, speed humps and kerbs slowly and at an angle. Raising the suspension for car parks and driveways avoids scraping.

Can I install it myself at home?

A confident DIY installer can fit the lip, skirts, diffuser and spoiler with a second pair of hands, but a hoist makes the job much easier on a tall, heavy SUV. Many owners prefer professional fitment to get the wide front lip aligned and paint-matched.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
