This is an installation guide for the CMST carbon-fibre kit on the 2023-onward BMW X5 G05 LCI, covering the front lip, front and rear wheel arches, side skirts, rear lip and roof spoiler. The kit is a bolt-on and adhesive fit over the factory panels using 3M VHB tape, panel-bonding adhesive and self-tapping screws. Most pieces are a moderate DIY job; the rear lip is the one step that needs care because it involves the rear bumper's parking-radar sensors. Plan a full day with two people and a hoist.

Tools and preparation

Before you start, gather the basics: a trim-removal set, a cordless drill with the correct bit for the self-tapping screws, isopropyl or a wax-and-grease remover, a heat gun or hairdryer, masking tape, a tape measure and an adhesion promoter for the 3M tape. The single most important step on any tape-bonded kit is surface preparation. The X5's paint must be clean, dry and above roughly 15°C for the VHB tape to key properly — in an Australian winter, warm the panels and the parts before bonding. Wipe every bonding surface with degreaser, let it flash off, then apply adhesion promoter where the instructions call for it.

Dry-fit every piece before you remove any backing tape. The G05 is a large car and the panels are long, so test-fitting tells you where the part naturally sits, where the screw points land and how much clearance you have at the corners. Mark those positions with masking tape so that when you commit the adhesive you are not guessing.

Difficulty and time estimate

This is a moderate install. The arches, skirts and roof spoiler are straightforward tape-and-screw jobs. The front lip needs careful drilling, and the rear lip is the one section that rewards patience because the rear bumper carries the parking-distance-control sensors and the original reflectors. Budget a full day, and treat every "two people" instruction in this guide literally — long carbon panels need one person holding alignment while the other commits the fixing.

Step 1: Front lip

The front lip mounts to the lower edge of the X5's front bumper. Apply 3M tape along the top mating edge of the lip, then mark and drill the corresponding location points for the screws and add a few beads of panel-bonding adhesive at those points for a permanent hold. Clean the bumper where the tape will sit using the adhesion promoter. Peel one end of the tape backing, have the second person hold the lip in alignment, confirm the fit along the whole bumper, then peel the remaining backing and press it home. Finish by driving the self-tapping screws underneath to lock the lower edge. Because the lip sits low at the front of a tall SUV, double-check ground and driveway clearance before the adhesive fully cures.

Step 2: Front and rear wheel arches

The arch set is four pieces — two front, two rear. Sort them into left and right before you begin, because the front and rear arches are shaped differently and are easy to mix up. Apply 3M tape around the full inner perimeter of each arch and add a few points of panel-bonding adhesive alongside the tape. Clean the car's arch surfaces with promoter, peel one end of the tape, and have two people align each arch to the body line before peeling the rest and pressing it down firmly. Work one arch at a time and press the whole length to seat the tape. The arches are the pieces most exposed to road spray and stone strike, so a thorough press now prevents an edge lifting later.

Step 3: Side skirts

The two side skirts bond along the lower door sills. Apply 3M tape to the top edge of each skirt, mark and drill the screw points, and add beads of glass adhesive at those points. Clean the sill, peel one end of the tape, and with two people align the skirt to the door line — getting the front-to-rear position right matters because the skirt has to meet both the front lip and the rear lip cleanly. Confirm the position, peel the remaining tape and press home, then one person holds the skirt while the other drives self-tapping screws underneath to fix it. Repeat on the other side using the same method.

Step 4: Rear lip (the careful one)

The rear lip is the step that needs the most attention. Start by removing the original rear wheel-arch trims and the rear bumper's reflector strips; on the G05 the rear bumper and lip come off together. The rear bumper carries the parking-distance-control radar sensors, which sit in a moulded base — you transfer that radar base across to the CMST rear lip so the sensors keep working. Locate the CMST lip on the bumper's clip points, drive self-tapping screws to fix it, and make sure the lip is pressed tight with no gap at the join. Reconnect the reflector and tail-light wiring as you reassemble: on these CMST rear pieces the wiring follows the original colours, with the red wire to positive and the black wire to earth — match factory colours and do not improvise. Finally, reinstall the original under-tray fasteners and refit the arch trims.

If you are not confident working around the radar sensors and the reflector wiring, this is the section to hand to a workshop. A mis-seated radar sensor can disable the car's parking aids, and the rear lip's fit is the most visible join on the whole kit.

Step 5: Roof spoiler

The roof spoiler bonds to the top of the tailgate glass surround. Key the bonding faces with fine sandpaper, clean them with promoter, then apply 3M tape across the contact area and a few beads of glass adhesive in the middle, where the span is longest. Important: do not seal over the spoiler's moulded air-vent gaps — they are there by design and must stay open. Peel one end of the tape, align the spoiler centrally with two people checking both ends, confirm symmetry, peel the rest and press firmly along the whole length. Hold it under pressure while the adhesive grabs.

Fitment tips and cautions

• Temperature is everything. 3M VHB tape needs a warm, dry surface. Bond indoors and warm the parts in cold weather.
• Dry-fit first, commit once. Tape is unforgiving — mark positions with masking tape before peeling backing.
• Sort left/right and front/rear arches before starting so you don't bond a piece to the wrong corner.
• Protect the radar. Transfer the parking-sensor base carefully and test the parking aids before final reassembly.
• Cure time. Avoid a car wash or heavy rain for the period the adhesive needs to reach full strength.
• Paint-matching. If you are colour-coding any piece rather than leaving exposed carbon, paint before fitting so the bonding face stays bare for adhesion.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the X5 G05 install take?

Allow a full day with two people. The arches, skirts and spoiler go quickly; the front lip and especially the rear lip with its radar sensors take the most time.

Will the parking sensors still work after fitting the rear lip?

Yes, provided you transfer the original radar base into the CMST rear lip and reconnect the wiring to factory positions. If a sensor is seated incorrectly the parking aids can fault, so test them before final reassembly.

Do I need to drill into my car?

The self-tapping screws fix into the lower edges of the kit pieces and the car's lower mounting areas, not visible bodywork. Combined with 3M tape and panel-bonding adhesive, the fixings give a permanent hold; the visible surfaces stay clean.

Can I do this without a hoist?

A hoist makes the front lip, side skirts and rear-lip work far easier and safer because so much of it is along the lower edges of a tall SUV. It can be done on ramps, but access is harder and alignment takes longer.
