BMW 5 Series G60/G68 CMST Carbon Kit Install

による AME Motorsport 01 Jul 2026

This is an installation guide for the CMST carbon-fibre kit on the 2024-onward BMW 5 Series G60 sedan and G68 (long-wheelbase), covering the front lip and the rear lip. Both pieces fit over the factory bumpers using 3M VHB tape, panel-bonding adhesive and self-tapping screws; the front lip uses eight self-tappers across the car, and the rear lip requires removing the tail-lights to access the bumper. This is a moderate install — allow most of a day with two people and a hoist.

  • Vehicle: BMW 5 Series G60 sedan / G68 long-wheelbase, 2024 onward
  • Pieces covered: Front lip, rear lip
  • Fixings: 3M VHB tape, panel-bonding adhesive, self-tapping screws (eight on the front lip)
  • Difficulty: Moderate; the rear lip needs the tail-lights out
  • Time: Most of a day with two people

Tools and preparation

Have ready a trim-removal kit, a cordless drill, fine sandpaper, degreaser, adhesion promoter, masking tape and a heat gun. The G60 is a brand-new chassis with large, smooth lower bumper surfaces, so the bond area is generous — but it still needs proper prep. Lightly key the bonding face of each piece with sandpaper, degrease both the part and the car, apply adhesion promoter, and only bond when the surfaces are warm and dry, above roughly 15°C. In cooler weather, warm the car and the parts indoors first.

Dry-fit both the front lip and the rear lip before peeling any tape, and mark their positions with masking tape so the alignment is set before you commit.

Difficulty and time estimate

This is a moderate install. The front lip is a straightforward sand, bond and screw job. The rear lip is rated slightly higher only because it requires removing the rear tail-lights to get clean access to the bumper. Neither step is difficult for a careful owner, but both are easier with two people. Budget most of a day.

Step 1: Front lip

Begin by keying the bonding face of the front lip with sandpaper, then degrease it and the lower bumper and apply adhesion promoter where the tape and adhesive will sit. Run 3M VHB tape along the lip's mating edge and add a few beads of panel-bonding (glass) adhesive alongside it. Peel one end of the tape backing, and with a second person align the lip across the whole front bumper — confirm it is centred and sits flush at both corners — then peel the remaining backing and press it home firmly along its length.

Fix the lower edge with the self-tapping screws: on the G60 front lip there are eight self-tappers across the car (the same arrangement repeats on both sides), which lock the bottom of the lip to the bumper so the tape and adhesive carry the top edge. Then attend to the lip's corner pieces: bond each corner with 3M and a few points of adhesive, align it to the bumper and press it home. Because the lip sits low at the front, check your driveway and ramp clearance before the adhesive fully cures.

Step 2: Rear lip

The rear lip needs the rear lighting out of the way. Start by removing the rear tail-lights so you can access the bumper fixings and the bonding area cleanly — on the G60 the tail-lights unbolt and unclip, and taking them out avoids forcing the lip around them. With the lights out, key and degrease the rear bumper's lower edge.

Apply 3M tape to the tail-light-adjacent bonding area as the instructions show, then run tape and a few beads of panel-bonding adhesive along the rear lip's mating edge. Locate the lip on the bumper's clip points, press it into position and fix it with self-tapping screws so it seats tight with no gap at the join. Reinstall the tail-lights, checking they clip back fully and that the lights work before you finish. As with the front, confirm the lip is even on both sides from a few steps back.

Fitment tips and cautions

  • Key and degrease every bonding face. The G60's smooth bumpers need a sanded, clean, promoted surface for the tape to hold.
  • Eight screws on the front lip. Use the full self-tapper count so the lower edge is properly fixed.
  • Tail-lights out for the rear lip. Remove them for clean access and refit them carefully, checking operation.
  • Warm, dry conditions. 3M VHB tape needs warm surfaces; bond indoors in the cold.
  • Dry-fit and mark before peeling backing — tape does not give a second chance once pressed.
  • Cure time. Avoid rain and car washes while the adhesive reaches full strength.

What the lip and rear lip change on the G60

The G60 is a large, smooth-sided sedan with tall surfaces and a high beltline, and from the factory the lower bumpers are fairly plain. That is exactly why a front lip and a rear lip do so much work on this car: they add a defined lower edge to surfaces that are otherwise unbroken, which visually lowers the car and gives the front and rear a flatter, more planted line. On a sedan this size, a subtle carbon lip reads as a factory M Performance-style upgrade rather than an aftermarket add-on, especially when the weave is left exposed against the paint.

Because both pieces are lower-edge aero rather than full bumper replacements, they keep the car's original lighting, grille and sensor layout intact. That is part of the appeal on a brand-new chassis like the G60 — you change the car's stance and detail without touching the parts that are expensive or complex to replace, and the whole kit stays reversible.

After installation: checks, compliance and care

When both lips are fitted, walk around the car before driving it. Confirm the front lip is centred and even at both corners, the rear lip sits flush with no gap at the join, and there are no proud edges that a car-wash brush could lift. Refit and test the tail-lights, check the indicators and reversing lights, and reverse slowly with a spotter to make sure the parking aids still read correctly.

Let the adhesive cure before exposing the car to a high-pressure wash or heavy rain — VHB-style tape keeps building bond strength over the first day or two. For the first week, avoid automatic washes with rotating brushes that can catch a freshly bonded edge. In cooler weather the bond develops more slowly, so give it extra time.

For Australian road use, the key consideration with a low front lip is ground clearance and protrusion: make sure the lip does not drop clearance below your state's minimum and that no sharp edge extends past the bodywork. A workshop can confirm your fitment is within the rules if you are unsure. Keeping the kit bonded and screwed rather than permanently built into the structure means it can be removed and the car returned to standard.

Care is the same as for paint. Wash and dry the carbon normally, keep a wax or sealant over the lacquer to protect it from UV, and skip abrasive polishes that can haze the clear coat. The G60's lips sit low and pick up road film, so a routine wipe-down keeps the weave crisp.

Frequently asked questions

Does the kit fit both the G60 and the long-wheelbase G68?

The front and rear lips in this kit are designed for the 2024-onward 5 Series across the G60 standard-wheelbase and G68 long-wheelbase cars, which share the same bumpers. Confirm your exact model and any factory M Sport bumper differences when ordering.

Why do the tail-lights have to come out for the rear lip?

Removing them gives clean access to the bumper fixings and the bonding area, and lets the lip seat correctly without being forced around the lights. They unbolt and unclip, and you refit them once the lip is in place.

How many screws does the front lip use?

The G60 front lip is fixed with eight self-tapping screws along its lower edge, in addition to the 3M tape and panel-bonding adhesive on the top edge. The combination gives a permanent, secure hold.

Do I need a hoist?

A hoist makes the front lip and rear lip far easier because both run along the lower edges of the car, and the rear job involves the tail-lights and bumper. It can be done on ramps, but a hoist gives better access and alignment.

Should I have it professionally fitted?

For the cleanest result, especially on the rear lip with the tail-lights out, professional fitment is worth considering. AME Motorsport can arrange installation in Australia so the bonding, screws and alignment are done correctly.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
